Ultra-Shear borrowed a technique from metal-working tool companies to bring you short cut length pattern bits unlike any others on the market. Solid carbide spiral bits typically have cutting diameters that match their shank. A cutting diameter larger than the shank involves grinding away immense amounts of carbide to create the shank. That’s why most router bits have carbide edges brazed to a steel body. But that eliminates the cutting geometry and concentricity advantages of solid carbide spirals. Our new Hybrid bits marry a solid carbide spiral cutting head with an economical steel shaft. This opens up a world of opportunities for unique, high-performance designs while keeping prices competitive. The first of our Hybrid bits is a group of short cut length pattern bits. You may know them as “dado clean-out” bits, but that name doesn’t begin to cover all the jobs these bits can tackle.

Whether you’re trying to clean up a ragged surface or your dado wasn’t quite deep enough, Ultra-Shear Hybrid Shallow Pattern Bits machine the bottom of a dado without affecting the width. Just ride the bearing against the sides with the depth of cut set where you need it. You’ll get a smooth bottom surface that will enhance your exposed joinery. With depth of cut starting at just 3/16″ and a close fit between the bearing and the cutter, you can clean up even the shallowest of dadoes.
You can face a similar problem with holes from a Forstner bit. The center spur cuts much deeper than the rest of the bit. You can eliminate the unsightly center spur mark with these Shallow Pattern Bits. Just ride the bearing around the perimeter, cutting deeper, but never changing the diameter.
These bits also excel at hinge mortising and other template routing chores. Unlike most of the pattern bits on the market, your template doesn’t have to be extra thick to give you the shallow depth of cut you need for standard hinges.
